Who I Am

Jason Matthew Malli, M.F.A., M.A.L.S., a longtime resident of Connecticut, has composed music for over 40 years. After completing his MFA in Music Composition at Vermont College of Fine Arts in 2013, concentrating on both contemporary concert and electroacoustic music, Malli continues to delve into the realms of microtones, poly-temporality, sound masses, extended instruments, analog synthesis, and digital sound all while still cultivating his life long passion and interest for folkloric melodies and the exploration of human narratives as effective vehicles for artistic expression. Recent accomplishments include multi-speaker and binaural realizations for fixed media works including “consubstantial,” which first premiered at NYCEMF 2014. Earlier that year, Jason’s chamber ensemble composition, “The Gathering of Sects was premiered at the inaugural Emerging Composers Concert at Boston Conservatory sponsored by Boston Musica Viva in April 2014.

Why I Work | How I Work

Composing for contemporary concert and electroacoustic realms, Jason Matthew Malli employs an aesthetic that involves the redistribution of musical elements and properties within any possible structuralization. In his concert compositions, non-temporal jurisdiction practices, common in free improvisation, merge as sound masses do in electroacoustic music. His process aims to expand and contract minimal and microcosmic gestures inside broader contexts of timbre, time, spectrum, and perception as exemplified by Toward Syzygy for Percussion Trio.

Motetus Obscura for Chamber Ensemble and Electronics features strictly composed sections complemented by improvisational passages assigning matrices of choices to performers to freely alter tempo contrapuntally against the ensemble. Whether samples or live instrument sounds Jason’s vibe often suggests folkloric tunes or ancient chants.

Enter into the listening experiences of Chimaera for Solo ViolinThe Delightful Garden, and Massive Energetic Shift 040916 for haunting quarter-tone passages. Malli’s recent work reflects his desire to stretch the elements into imagined fractal and multi-dimensional musical spaces. Per aspera ad astraconsubstantialTempus fugit, and incarnate were composed in these spaces using analog and granular synthesis and generative and algorithmic processes.
